A Christian Hero – George Muller

Posted on

George MullerWe are currently reading Janet & Geoff Benge’s book “The Guardian of Bristol’s Orphans”. This book takes you through the life of George Muller. As we read each chapter of this book it just amazes me at how God provided for this man and those he cared for and is a reminder that He is still the same God today and can provide for us if we allow Him to. I will not give away too much of the story in the hopes that you will pick up a copy and take part in this journey along with us. Just let me say that it is definitely worth every minute of your time. After we have read one chapter my children ask for just one more chapter and I have to say no as we have other subjects to attend to. It is my secret wish that I really could go on and just finish the book, however it has me in suspense and that is what a good book ought to do to the reader!

It begins when George was a young man in Prussia during the early 1800’s. He lived his teen years with no care or regret. His journey takes you through his beginnings of drunkenness, stealing, lies and much more. It isn’t until later that we see redemption and a man who has found his purpose in life. We all have purpose and we all need hope and this man George still lives to tell through this book of the redemption and provision that God can do through one person. George opened his heart to the need that was around him. He and his wife opened their home to several poor orphaned children during the mid 1800’s in Bristol, England and later that number grew to over ten thousand children who needed a place to call home. There is so much history to this book and is a must read to those who wish to know learn about the heroes that have gone before us. If you wish to take part in reading this book please share any insights with us.

Man’s Slave Becomes God’s Scientist

Posted on

We have just finished reading the story of George Washington Carver. We had no idea who this man was. We now have a great deal of knowledge to share about him. George declared that “Without my Savior, I am nothing”. A man born to slave parents young George was orphaned and raised by Mr & Mrs. Carver. He was also called the $300 dollar baby, because of him being ill with the whooping-cough. The bill for the doctor was $300. The whooping-cough left George with a very high-pitched voice but this did not deter him from being a overcomer! George was always curious and fascinated by plant life even from an early age when he would help Mr. Moses Carver on the farm. This fascination led George to attend further education which for a black person was very difficult. He overcame poverty, and fought racial prejudice for most of his life. Always seeking the Lord’s desire he knew he could make an impact in the farming and crop industry. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life.

George Washington Carver was greatly used by God to discover countless numbers of scientific wonders and to lead a life which has inspired millions of Christians everywhere! We enjoyed this book immensely and I hope you find great joy and inspiration as you read it. It was very hard to put the book down after one chapter. The children would ask the first thing in the morning “can we start by reading George Washington Carver!”. I knew then that I had found the right book!!!

Good Reading!

Learning to Sew!

Our sewing machine

If I can learn to sew you can too! My daughter and I went to the library this weekend to start on our new adventure of sewing.  I was a little apprehensive at first but after walking into the room with  almost 10 other women there, I felt at ease.  You see I never  got the hang of sewing in highschool and was more interested in painting.  Well here we were at  the beginning of how to use our sewing machine.  It became quite fun and relaxing.  My daughter Hannah is a quick learner and by the end of the class we were using all the different  stitches available on the machine.  We are so excited and can’t wait to get back their next month.

What new adventures are you up to these days? Friends have told me about new recipes, learning how to coupon, writing songs, the list goes on.  Please leave your comments.  I would love to hear about them.
